Mahanoy City hits second alarm, female flown to trauma center

SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, PA – Shortly before 9:00 PM on Wednesday, December 11, the Mahanoy City Fire Department was sent to 1031 East Pine Street in Mahanoy City for a reported house fire.  Crews were advised to use caution while responding as there was an active domestic dispute at this residence.  Frackville Ladder 43-20 and Mahanoy City EMS were also due on the assignment.

Mahanoy City Police arrived on scene to confirm a working fire at this location.  EMS was requested to the front of the building for an injured female.  Shenandoah ALS was dispatched to the scene.  Ambulance 4803 arrived at the patient and requested aeromedical be placed on stand by to possibly transport the patient to a trauma center.

Tower 456 took the address while Engine 451 came from the West and secured a water supply.  Engine 456 came from the East and also secured a water supply.  Engine 454 took the rear of the building.  Multiple lines were stretched into the fire building and exposures.

Crews experienced a large volume of fire in the basement of the original fire building.  The tower was placed into operation and crews went to the roof to ventilate.  A second alarm was requested into the scene.

Upon further assessment of the patient, EMS requested aeromedical to fly the patient to a trauma center.  The patient was transported to SCI Mahanoy where EMS met MedEvac 7.

The bulk of the fire was knocked down within twenty minutes of apparatus arriving on scene.  The second alarm companies were requested to respond at a reduced rate.  Firefighters continued to search for extension and hot spots while clearing smoke from the houses using fans.

Crews started to be released before 10:00 PM.  A Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshall was requested to the scene to aid in the investigation.  Mahanoy City Police took one male into custody and transported him back to their station.
