Heights house catches fire

SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, PA – At 10:43 PM on Tuesday, April 9, Schuylkill County 9-1-1 dispatched the West Mahanoy Township Fire Department (Shenandoah Heights, William Penn and Altamont), the Shenandoah Fire Department for Squrt 745 and Squad 741, Englewood Fire for their Rapid Intervention Team and Shenandoah ALS to 191 Ohio Avenue in the Shenandoah Heights section of the township for a reported house fire.  The call was quickly upgraded to a fire with entrapment.

Police arrived on scene and confirmed a fire with all occupants out of both sides of the duplex.  Squrt 745 was the first unit on scene and found fire venting from the basement-level garage.  Heights Engine 881 was the next in unit and positioned behind the Squrt.

A line was stretched to knock down the fire and crews entered the house to perform a search.  Altamont Engine 368 came in from the East Side of Ohio Avenue and sent their crew to the front of the building.  Englewood’s RIT staged near Engine 881.

The bulk of fire was knocked down within ten minutes of crews arriving on the scene.  Crews continued to ventilate the building and check for extension.  The fire was placed under control within a half hour and crews began to be released after 45 minutes.  A State Police fire marshal was requested to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire.
